Tulum Beaches: Playa Paraíso, Las Palmas and the Sargassum Reality
5 min read
Choose Playa Paraíso or Las Palmas for a beach day on the protected coast around the ruins; choose the southern hotel zone for beach clubs and accommodation access. Do not choose any Tulum beach weeks ahead on the promise that it will be free of sargassum. Conditions can differ between neighbouring stretches and change quickly, so the useful decision is made on the day.
Access to this coast has changed several times in a short time. From December 2024 the army ran the Parque del Jaguar and Tulum National Park, the protected area around the ruins, and charged for entry. On 12 November 2025 the state and federal governments opened free public beach accesses inside the Parque del Jaguar, every day of the year. By July 2026 the free accesses ran through the Santa Fe entrance, the traditional entrance and the southern entrance. The same month the state government said that entering the park and its beaches on foot or by bicycle is free for everyone, and that the only mandatory payment there is admission to the archaeological zone. Park fees have changed several times since 2024, so check them on the day rather than relying on a figure from an article. One snorkel operator based at Playa Pescadores inside the park also warns that the park does not allow sunscreen of any kind, single-use plastics or alcohol; bring a rash guard and water in a reusable bottle.
Playa Paraíso or Las Palmas?
| Area | Character | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Playa Paraíso | A wide beach inside the protected area, south of the ruins | You want the recognisable Tulum beach landscape and nearby services |
| Las Palmas | Reached through the Parque del Jaguar access, about 1.5 km on foot from the entrance for visitors who are not staying there | You do not mind the walk to reach your stretch of sand |
| Southern hotel zone | Hotels and beach clubs; some free public accesses, other stretches only for guests | You have accommodation access or deliberately want paid facilities |
The Parque del Jaguar access to Las Palmas opens at 8am and you can stay until 7pm, according to a March 2026 report in El Financiero, so it is neither a sunrise nor a starlight beach. Driving in is the harder part. In July 2026 Uno TV found that there is no public car park inside the protected area yet: to take a car in, you need a reservation with a hotel or beach club inside, which in practice means spending money there. Otherwise you leave the car outside and walk or pay for the internal transport. If a car supports several Riviera Maya days, compare rentals in Tulum; for one beach visit, the parking problem can outweigh the benefit.
What sargassum changes
Sargassum is not a small cosmetic detail when an arrival is heavy: it can cover the waterline, smell as it decomposes and make swimming unpleasant. Quintana Roo reports sargassum with a traffic light, from green for low presence through yellow and orange to red for very high presence. Check the beach-by-beach update on the morning you go, then ask your accommodation or beach operator what the shore looks like now.
No calendar can guarantee a clear beach, and one state-wide colour does not describe your beach. On 8 October 2026 the navy rated the sargassum at sea as very low, a green light, while the state environment ministry still counted 21 of 140 monitored Caribbean beaches with excessive arrivals. At the end of July the Sargazo Monitor platform had at least eleven stretches of the Quintana Roo coast on red. If the coast is poor, switch the day’s plan rather than forcing the postcard: a cenote or archaeological visit is a better use of time.
For a water outing that includes the coast rather than a full beach day, the one-hour sea-turtle and reef snorkel with a view of the ruins starts at €19.58. It leaves from Playa Santa Fe in the hotel zone, takes groups of up to eight, and includes the boat, snorkel gear and a life vest; transport to the beach, food and drinks are not included. Its page lists sunscreen among the things to bring, while the Playa Pescadores operator quoted above says the park allows none; a rash guard avoids the question. The operator lists it as unsuitable for non-swimmers and for people prone to seasickness.
Recommendation
Start with Playa Paraíso when the sargassum light and a same-day look at the shore are favourable. Try Las Palmas when you do not mind the walk from the access. Choose the hotel zone only when its facilities or your accommodation access are part of the plan. The honest rule is simple: pick the cleanest suitable shore today, not the beach with the strongest reputation online.
